Computer Program to make Valve Spring Calculations which affect Spring Rate, Bind Height, Natural Frequency, Open Force, Stress, and Much More

This program lets you estimate valve spring performance from several different inputs, and lets you combine springs into 2 and 3 pack springs.  The Plus Version described below allows for more spring details and other features.

Once you have the spring specs entered, the program will calculate critical spring characteristics like bind height, natural frequency, Spring Rate, force at various valve lifts, internal stress, and much more.  You can also do a side-by-side comparison of 2 different spring pack designs.

Then you can combine the valve spring info with cam and valve train data to do dynamics analysis to find potential spring surge problems.  The program is similar to the old, DOS Spring Master program developed by Steve Gruenwald of Integral Cams, which is no longer supported.  

 

The Analysis Screen shows the analysis of the cam profile combined with the spring data and other valve train specs, including such things as:

  • Frequency analysis.   Frequency analysis is done by FFT (fast fourier transformation) and is used to determine the likelihood of spring surge at various RPMs.  
  • Required Force and Safety Margin which determines if you have enough spring to control the valve train mass for the rpm range you want to run.
  • Pointing out if the stress in the spring is very high.
  • Pointing out if the valve's seating velocity is too high.
  • And much more.

"Find a Spring"

The powerful and easy "Find a Spring" feature lets you find several combinations of valve spring specs to meet your engine's requirements.  You will enter info about your engine's valve train and camshaft, and enter a few simple inputs as shown below, and then the program will find a valve spring to control this valve train at the RPM you have specified.

The results from "Find a Spring" are shown below, and consist of 20 combinations of Seated Force (installed force) and Spring Rate which will control the valve train.  That means it will keep the valve train in contact with the cam profile at the specified RPM.  The Safety Factor is how much more spring force the program suggests over the bare minimum needed.  For example, if 400 lbs is needed, but you have specified a 20% safety factor, the program will suggest a spring combination which produces 480 lbs at the critical valve lift.  The program also suggests a minimum valve spring natural frequency to avoid valve spring surge.

Once you have these suggestions, now you can go back and build your spring pack which produces the performance you require.

 

Plus Version

The Plus version adds additional features to the Spring Wiz program, including:

  • Allowing "Rev Kit" spring to be included in the analysis.  A "Rev Kit" is a spring which only restrains the lifter in push rod engines.
  • Allows for more details about the spring properties, including cross section "Aspect Ratio" of the spring wire (circular or oval), and material properties.
  • Allows for reading a "1440" point cam file, recorded at 0.25 cam deg.  (The program still uses data at every 1.0 cam degrees, but you can choose which 360 data points to use of the 1440.)
  • Allows for more details (actual durations at either seat, .040"/.050", and/or .200") for calculating a Ramp Rating.
  • Preference setting of Metric units like millimeters, Newtons or KG, MPa, etc.
  • Preference setting to choose either Newtons or KG for the force units.

V1.1B Standard and Plus Versions

Version 1.1 B was released in November 2024 and added these new features:

Standard and Plus Version new features:

  1. New types of reports can be printed.
  2. New checks are made to see if inputs make sense.
  3. New Calculation utilities to calculate inputs from other settings.
  4. New output on the main screen of Net Valve Lift, which is the same as the existing Gross Valve Lift, but with the lash subtracted out.

Plus Version new features (not in Standard version):

  1. Fatigue and Stress Analysis reports have been added, to estimate the life of the springs. 
  2. Beehive and Tapered springs have been added as Spring Types. 
  3. The Calculation utility for Valve Mass now has an adjustment for standard Cylindrical, Tapered or Beehive springs. 
  4. Detailed, High Resolution Graphs for the Frequency Analysis screen have been added.
